Virgil Abloh celebrates icon Dondi White
According to the latest data analysed by The Business of Fashion in partnership with search platform Lyst, Virgil Abloh‘s Off-White fashion label experienced an impressive ascent in the last months. It jumped 31 positions in the high fashion scenery to place as the third-hottest brand behind Balenciaga and Gucci.
As part of a new cluster of fashion designers, Abloh is highly appreciated because of his elevation of streetwear within the realms of high fashion. Founded by himself in 2012, his label is well suited to Millennials and Gen-Z consumers, whose dress code is internet-driven: it’s in a happy mix of high and low price elements, alongside disparate aesthetics and cultural backgrounds influences.
Held at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, Abloh’s latest fashion show dealt with the archetype of the American rebel. First of all, the lead character Jim Stark from 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause – that gave the name to the Spring 2019 collection: he drinks and smokes, and dies tragically young. His personal style is reinterpreted in Off-White’s lineup, where white and graphic t-shirts, worker denim trousers and red Harrington jackets are reproposed for a urban and youthful vibe. Denim is distressed and treated with all kind of embellishments -as embroideries and rips- and matches a pair of Doctor Martens with the OFF-WHITE tag.
Another rebel is street artist Dondi White: one of the founders of graffiti art during the 70’s and 80’s, he was a key player in New York’s downtown scene.
Lastly, Matt Groening’s iconic cartoon creation, Bart Simpson, who appears here on sweaters and t-shirts surrounded by flames.
One curiosity: it seems that part of the collection proceeds will go to God’s Love We Deliver, a fundraising organization supported by Dondi himself, that offers food to people with severe diseases in the five New York’s districts.
