On the runway of a currently directionless Oscar de la Renta…
I should let you know that it has been a dream of mine to die in an Oscar de la Renta. But with Peter Copper transitioning out of the creative director role, and the Monse designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia still in between the changeover, no one was sure what to expect from the fashion house. Pretty dresses paraded down the catwalk. The collection covered both day and evening wear. Bohemian inspired day dresses were heavily printed or embroidered with calico, paisley, and tribal detailing. Fine crystal pleats and bold doily-like laces were, dare I say, a little too trendy? I say that in agreement with Anna Wintour’s definition of trendy. Trendy is the last stage before obsolete. And I have definitely seen too much of it in the last couple of seasons. The evening wear pieces of the collection had a better run this season. Organza bishop sleeves produced a sensual and elegant appearance. An all-black lace gown with a plunging neckline was equally as stunning. But the end result was still a runway of pretty dresses and nothing more. I guess that is what you get when the atelier is between creative directors.
