THE MICAM S / S ’17

Last evening I found myself at The MICAM, the international footwear fair sponsored by ASSOCALZATURIFICI ITALIANI (the Association of Italian Footwear Manufacturers) and WGSN (the global trend forecasting service for fashion and other creatives). An area of 64,000 square meters flooded with shoes attending to the Spring/Summer ’17 trends and buyers from all around the world, it is a sanctuary for shoe lovers.

The event runs biannually, in February and in September, and this season’s event is between 3rd and 6th of September. The exhibition grounds are divided into categories, like contemporary, luxury, cosmopolitan, activewear, and a section for kids. There is an entirely separate section for bags under the name MIPEL. There is also a fashion show featuring the upcoming season’s prominent trends to accompany the hundreds of manufacturers showcasing their designs.

I walked around for a few hours and what I couldn’t get away from was glitter. Chunky, gritty, glitter shoes. They were on sandals and sneakers, some made entirely of glitter as if dipped in it while others had accents of it. Colours included silver, gold, and rose gold. Accompanied by this chunky grit was foiling and leafing, and of course sequencing. And glitter wasn’t the only thing that brought forth the rose gold colour. The rose gold is coming back for another season with it’s pastel pink sibling. The colourful bohemian gladiator sandals decorated with pom pom balls also managed to make their way to the next season, this time making more of a statement with adorable metal charms like sun/moon charms and evil eye charms. Luxury stayed grounded with more neutral colours and cleaner textures, although the metallics trickled upwards as well. Whats more? Ethnic embroidery, Swarovski crystals, pointed toe silhouettes, tie details, mesh and mesh-like textures, and fur. My absolute favourite was the revival of the clear shoes with different crystal toe-top pieces, a la Cinderella.
