Replica of 31 rue Cambon at Grand Palais
The Fall 2019 Haute Couture show at the house of Chanel saw the Grand Palais transformed into a majestic library. It is an inflated rendition of Coco Chanel’s private library in her Parisian apartment in 31 rue Cambon, with which Virginie Viard wanted to pay tribute to the founder’s well known love of books. Gabrielle’s revolutionary approach to fashion was indeed nurtured by her cultivated spirit: she loved literature’s elegant words and poetry’s magic, that had the power to open new landscapes of possibilities and influence her throughout her life.
The round-shaped library felt then entrancing, as much enveloping as the reading of a captivated novel can be, rendered even more welcoming and soothing by the use of wood for both the circular walls and the staircase. The purity of the scenery lines and their geometry perfectly blended with Viard’s clean-cut collection: reminiscent of the 1930’s allure and fruits of Couture maîtrise and savoir-faire, the slender outfits convey the sophisticated ease that was so dear to Mademoiselle Chanel, making of Virginie Viard the authentic heir of Coco’s precious cultural legacy today.
