People street style from J.W. Anderson Spring 2019 show in London.
15th-19th february 2019
London Fashion Week is going to be put to the test while Brexit is approaching: many are the industries in fashion – even more than in other fields – that are adverse to the impending withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU. The reasons are obvious, due to the fact that most of designers are coming from abroad (Mary Katrantzou, Simone Rocha, Roksanda Ilincic, Riccardo Tisci from Burberry and Roland Mouret, just to mention a few names), and Brexit will definitely determine a flow decrease in British fashion schools, brands’ headquarters and fashion week’s audience.
Lots of young brands (as Bora Aksu, Xu Zhi, Ernesto Naranjo, Renata Brenha, Ryan Lo among others) are also led by non-British designers. Among them, a young promising fashion designer is Supriya Lele, who amazed the fashion public with her first Anglo-Indian collection last season, and she’s ready to present the second lineup.
For now, what will be the last London Fashion Week before Brexit (starting from 29th of March) will see the major brands showcase their Womenswear Fall/Winter 2019 collections and still enjoy their wide audience: Vivienne Westwood, Victoria Beckham, Burberry, Erdem, J.W. Anderson, Pringle of Scotland and House of Holland won’t miss the London schedule.
Delpozo will not answer the roll call: after the left of Josep Font, all fashion system’s eyes are on the new creative director Lutz Huelle – who will make his official debut with the Spring 2020 collection -, wondering whether he will maintain the high standards of the Spanish brand or target a more democratic aim.
Celebrations are on schedule for the British designer Zandra Rhodes for her 50th anniversary in fashion, and for Hussein Chalayan for his 25th anniversary after his debut in London in 1994.
